Pre-Treatment Instructions Before Colonoscopy
Proper preparation is very important before your colonoscopy. A clean bowel helps your doctor examine the large intestine clearly and accurately.
1. Follow Your Diet Instructions
Your doctor will advise you about changes to your diet before the procedure. You may need to avoid high-fibre foods and follow a low-fibre or clear-liquid diet, depending on your preparation plan.
2. Take Your Bowel Preparation Medicine
Take the bowel-cleansing medicine prescribed by your doctor, following the exact dose and timing provided. This medicine will cause frequent, loose bowel movements to clean your intestine.
3. Drink Enough Fluids
Drink the permitted clear fluids as instructed to help prevent dehydration. Avoid drinks containing red or purple colouring if your doctor has advised you to follow a clear-liquid diet.
4. Stay Close to a Toilet
After taking the bowel preparation medicine, you will need to use the toilet frequently. Plan to remain at home or somewhere with easy toilet access.
5. Discuss Your Regular Medicines
Inform your doctor if you take blood thinners, diabetes medicines, iron supplements or other regular medicines. Your doctor will tell you whether any changes are needed. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
6. Follow Fasting Instructions
Stop eating and drinking at the exact times specified by your doctor or endoscopy centre. These instructions are important for your safety during the procedure.
7. Arrange Someone to Accompany You
If sedation is planned, arrange for a responsible adult to take you home. You should not drive after receiving sedation.
8. Contact Your Doctor if Needed
If you cannot complete the bowel preparation, experience repeated vomiting, severe abdominal pain or significant dizziness, contact your medical team promptly for advice.
